If you ever wondered how to be the sweetest uncle of all time, here is what I did to achieve that avuncular status:
I was about 90 miles away when my little niece was born. After my father called me to relay the stupendous news, naturally, I was overcome with emotion. Amid some happy tears, I scribbled out these lyrics, took up the guitar and in about half an hour –> I had a song.
As the second best uncle in recorded history, I wanted to make this baby a gift that she could cherish forever. Yes, I performed it for my family a few days later, but musical performances are but fleeting moments of spontaneous creation. So, I notated the song, printed it out with some adorable images, and framed it up for posterity. Here’s a complete transcription of the score: Amelia. A few notes about the lyrics: Amelia was born on the first day of spring, and she shares a birthday with my daddy.
Hopefully, when this little baby comes to learn to read (and read music), she’ll see that Uncle Matthew loved her from the very first minute.
